Once you start looking at what an ordinary street is actually made of, you begin to notice the boxes: utility cabinets, for the most part. They stand in front of houses, at the edge of a wood, along a gravel path, beside a motorway. Often only a few dozen meters separate one from the next. Nobody pays them any attention, and yet they shape the impression we have of our towns more than any landmark does.
The title is meant with some irony. Even the smallest and least remarkable village in Germany has its monuments; most people simply fail to recognize them. I photograph them the way one would photograph a monument: frontally, whole, and with the seriousness the genre demands.
