Worshippers

In museums I keep seeing the same gesture: a phone raised above the crowd, both arms stretched toward the work. From behind, it looks like prayer.

In On Photography, Susan Sontag observed that tourists put the camera between themselves and whatever is remarkable, as a kind of shield. The smartphone has made that universal. Research confirms what the gesture suggests: people who photograph their way through a museum remember less than those who simply look.

The devotion in these pictures is aimed at the work and still misses it.
